Vogue Italia February 2011 Issue
Editorial: "The Black Allure"
Photographer: Emma Summerton
Stylist: Edward Enninful
Models: Ajak Deng, Chanel Iman, Arlenis Sosa Peña, Jourdan Dunn, Melodie Monrose, Lais Ribeiro, Rose Cordero, Mia Aminata Niaria, Sessilee Lopez, Joan Smalls and Georgie Baddiel
We cringe a little at the title of this editorial but we're willing to chalk its condescension up to language differences. And while the very idea of an editorial based solely on the fact that the models are all black is still somewhat depressingly indicative of the tendency of the fashion industry to exoticize and marginalize any forms of non-European beauty, we simply can't deny that the pictures are stunning. The Harlem Renaissance as a theme is also a bit distressingly cliche, but we just can't stay mad at an editorial chock full of finger waves, turbans, and cigarette holders. Bottom line: glamorous as hell. Every single one of these gals rocks their look so much harder than the runway gals did. Enjoy, darlings.
