In or Out: January Jones in Alexander McQueen

I ran so far away.

January Jones arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of "Unknown" in Alexander McQueen.

What have we always said about this girl? That she should stick to simple and classic and not try so hard to be edgy. And what does she keep doing? She keeps trying to do edgy. These starlets, we tell ya. Thick as a brick sometimes.

However, despite our eagerly cultivated reputation for bitchiness, we are also magnanimous to a fault; to a saintly level, really. In that vein we're going to have to swallow a tiny little bit of crow and give her an IN on this one. We actually gasped a little when we saw it and had to really talk it out to decide if we liked it, but like it we do, even if it flicks at so many pet peeves of ours. We don't like asymetrical skirts as a rule; we're tired of seeing the Minnie Mouse pumps because they're so often deployed incorrectly (like, with a gown), she's attempting a very editorial or runway hairstyle on the red carpet, and on a technical level, the fit in the bust is kind of bad.

But somehow, this really comes together. Lorenzo is not sold on the hair, but Tom really likes it as one-off for her. It goes so well with the outfit and it's always the somewhat plainly pretty girls who can get away with something like, say Flock of Seagulls hair. Someone like Penelope Cruz would look laughably bad with her hair styled like this, but for the WASPish types, it makes for a nice juxtaposition, like a very watered-down red carpet version of a safety pin through a portrait of Queen Elizabeth. And the full, stiff quality of the skirt, as well as the mid-calf hem length coupled with the heavy black shoes remind us of classic New Look from the late '40s, but done up all modern like.

Sure, the lipstick's maybe a bit too heavy (a mistake she consistently makes) and maybe you can't get past the "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true" hair* but can you at least admit it's a head-turning look and the dress kind of calls for that little bit of edginess?

Kittens, we can't BELIEVE we're trying to convince you that January Jones is rocking a McQueen dress and New Wave hair, but that's life for you. It's like a box of chocolates, as Miss Sally Field so generously reminded us.

*Google it, youngsters.

Also, we're getting caught up on a lot of posts, so we REALLY don't need to be "reminded" of which ones aren't up yet, Bitter Kittens. We applaud your eagerness, but judge you for your impatience.
