Susan Boyle loses in final of Britain's Got Talent

Susan Boyle silenced her critics with a thrilling performance of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables

Susan Boyle was a shock loser last night after being beaten by dance group Diversity in the Britain's Got Talent final.

Diversity dramatically snatched the glory amid high drama.

The 10-piece group was crowned winner in a shock result following an emotion-charged two-hour final.

Amid stunned gasps from the audience the Essex-based act jumped for joy as Susan at first looked on stunned, then congratulated them saying: “The best people won. That’s showbiz.” And she shimmied on stage, lifting her dress to show her leg as she exited the stage with a broad, radiant smile on her face.Susan Boyle congratulated the winning dance troupe Diversity

Diversity took the £100,000 prize and a performance for the Queen at the Royal Variety show. Susan and Diversity made it into the final three of the show alongside saxophonist Julian Smith, 39, from Birmingham.

After the shock result was announced by Ant and Dec, one member of the troop said: “I was getting so excited thinking we were second. We feel electric. Words can’t describe it. I am genuinely shocked. We thought Susan was unstoppable. She’s an unbelievable talent. Can I just say, everyone who voted, you’ve changed her lives.”

Even the judges looked stunned by the result, as Susan graciously accepted defeat. Piers Morgan said: “I am officially a donut for saying Flawless were better. Diveristy were fantastic and a very worthy winner.”

Asked what she’ll do next, Susan added: “I hope to get an album out and I’ll just play it by ear. What a journey. It was unbelievable and very humbling. Thank you for everything.”

Earlier, BGT maestro Cowell had declared Diversity – who performed an urban dance routine – were the ONLY act he would award 10 out of 10 to, proving his knack for picking a winner.

He said: “I’ve got to tell you, all bets are off. If I had to give marks tonight, this would be the only one I would give 10. When I look at you now, there was not a step out of place. It was sheer perfection. I think you’ll win."

Amanda told them: “You have practically rendered me speechless. YOu’re choreography is second to none."
DiversityShock upset as dance troupe Diversity snatch victory

Diversity are Ashley Banjo 20, Jordan Banjo 16, Ian McNaughton 25, Jamie McNaughton 23, Matthew McNaughton 16, Mitchell Craske 12, Sam Craske 19, Warren Russell 18, Terry Smith 24, Perri Luc Kiely 13.

Last night it emerged that they already have a film deal on the table, as their transformation into overnight celebrities begins. The group’s choreographer Ashley said: “We feel electric. Words can’t describe it. I’m genuinely shocked. We thought Susan was unstoppable - she’s an unbelievable talent.”

And Simon even hinted they could end up supporting Michael Jackson in his UK show’s in July. He added: Their performance was immaculate. This show is about finding talented people.

Sax player Julian gave a solid performance and the judges gave him a standing ovation.

After performing Somewhere from West Side Story, he said: “I’m just so happy.
The real winners: The judges make an entrance, with Amanda in her show-stopping red dress

Meanwhile breakdancer Aidan Davis was reduced to tears by Simon Cowell’s scathing comments in the amazing final of Britain’s Got Talent.

The 11-year-old wiped his eyes and had to be comforted by hosts Ant and Dec after Simon laid into his dance act.

It came just 24 hours after 10-year-old Hollie Steel left weeping after suffering a meltdown on stage in the semi-final.

Simon told Aidan his breathtaking body-popping act, in which he surfed conveyor belts, was not as good as his performance the previous night.

He told him: “To be honest with you it wasn’t as good. You had 24 hours and limited time to put it together. But you still have a huge future ahead of you.

“But I have to talk to you like I would anyone else. It didn’t quite have the impact it did last night. It was great but it wasn’t as good.”

Aidan then burst into tears, despite getting huge praise from the other two judges. He had just a day to prepare his complex dance act. And he said afterwards: “I’m a bit gutted at Simon.”

Aidan had been given a standing ovation from the audience for his dance to Flo Rida’s Low.

He told how he had prepared his complex routine in five hours after getting through to the final.

He said: “I came in today at 2.30pm that’s when I actually started practising and I only rehearsed this three times before.”

Later Simon urged Aidan not to take his comments to heart. He said: “Don’t listen to me – no one else does. There’s the public vote.”

Courageous Hollie conquered her nerves to deliver a note-perfect performance hailed by Simon as “fantastic”.

He told her: “You chose a really tough song. You handled it brilliantly. I was on the edge of my seat.”

Hollie had been nearly pulled out of the show because her mother feared another tearful meltdown.

But she insisted on taking the stage – showing the same courage which won her a place in the final. And she wowed the judges as she belted out Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom Of The Opera.

Hollie had wilted on Friday night as nerves overcame her, then tearfully begged for another change to sing.

Fearing a repeat, mum Nina, 37, initially decided that would place too much pressure on her. She thought again, though, after plucky Hollie convinced her.

Proud Nina told the Sunday Mirror last night, shortly before the final began: “I have spoken to her at length and she is adamant that she wants to continue.”

Before taking to the stage the schoolgirl from Accrington, Lancs, told how winning the show would be “the bestest dream come true” and admitted she would love a record deal “so everyone can hear all the songs I can sing”.

Nina said: “It would be brilliant to get a record deal and record an album.”

In last night’s final Simon also praised Shaheen Jafargholi, saying his performance had convinced him it was right to put kids on stage. The lad was described as “absolutely unbelievable” by judge Piers Morgan.

The Swansea 12-year-old sang another Jackson Five classic, Smokey Robinson-penned Who’s Loving You.

Dressed in a blue shirt and waistcoat, he said: “Ever since I came out and sang in the semi-final I couldn’t wait to get back.” Simon said: “This debate about why we put kids on has really made me think this week.

“I was in two minds. But after that performance it made me realise if you’re talented, regardless of your age, why should we deny you your chance?

Amanda Holden said: “I can’t wait for you to back to school – they’ll say what did you do at half term and you’ll show them all your autographs.”

Susan Sarandon, sensational at 62

[susan+sarandon+pin+up.jpg]
Scarlet woman: Susan Sarandon looks decades younger than her 62 years as she poses in fishnets and a feather boa

Reclining on the floor, a dazzling redhead wearing nothing but a pair of fishnets and a feather boa gives the camera a knowing smile.

On closer inspection, the alluring model is Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon, looking decades younger than her 62 years.

Kate Hudson

Ooh la la: Kate Hudson shows her cheeky side in a fishnet body stocking and Christian Louboutin heels

Sarandon, a staunch feminist despite her regular appearance in films in a state of undress, has stripped off for a good cause.

The Oscar-winning star is one of 23 stars - and certainly one of the raciest - who have recreated the style of seductive Hollywood pin-ups from the 1940s.

Celebrated photographer Timothy White convinced stars including Sarandon, Kate Hudson, Cindy Crawford, Vanessa Williams and Denise Richards to take part in the risqué images.

Cindy CrawfordBikini babe: Cindy Crawford shows off her killer abs in a polka dot bikini

The sensational shots appear in White's coffee table book Hollywood Pin-Ups, with proceeds going to Oxfam.

Despite the sexual nature of the shots, White insists the women are empowered and confident.

Susan Sarandon

He said: 'All the great pin-up artists glorified the female form without being offensive.

'My infatuation with the pin-up girl has never wavered. To me, she is much more than a beautiful image; she is an empowered woman.'

Susan pictured earlier this year at the Speed Racer premiered in Los Angeles

Adding to the fantasy theme of the
images, White believes he has the artistic licence to digitally manipulate and airbrush the photos to perfection.

Sarandon has been photographed by White for over 20 years and jumped at the chance to recreate the classic pin-up.

She tells the Los Angeles Times: 'There were all kinds of things going on simultaneously - I remember trying to keep the boa in place covering my breasts.

'I recall that it was a little bit chilly lying there on the floor. I was arching my back and they had to put my hair down and around with the boa on the floor.

'My rule of thumb is the most uncomfortable pose looks the best; it's all about where you put your hands and if you're stretching your neck. I think I was leaning my feet against something, but I'm not sure.'

In another image, Hudson gives a seductive look dressed in nothing but a fishnet bodystocking, straw hat and Christian Louboutin stiletto heels.

The 29-year-old gives an air of Park Avenue Princess behind closed doors with her diamond accessories and Anna DePasquale designer hat.

In another image, Crawford shows off her amazing figure in a red polka-dot bikini.

Wearing a brunette wig, Crawford, 42, is one of the few stars not looking at the camera in the sexy shot.

The images were inspired by Peruvian artist Alberto Vargas, who painted semi-naked women for Esquire magazine in the 1940s.

The girls became known as 'Varga girls' and were often painted on World War II aircraft.

Gun 'used to murder Jennifer Hudson's family' found

The gun used to kill actress Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew has been found, police believe.

Oscar-winning Jennifer Hudson poses with her seven-year-old nephew.Photo: MySpace

The weapon was found by police searching a car park in Chicago near where an abandoned car was found with the body of seven-year-old Julian King inside.

It is being put through forensic tests, but it is believed that the ammunition from the recovered gun is the same make as the shell casings found at the murder scene.

Police were unable to give out details other than that a few other "small bits of evidence" were found in the bushes in the car park around the corner from where the car was found.

Hudson's mother, 57-year-old Darnell Donerson, and brother, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, were found on Friday shot dead in their home on Chicago's South Side. Her nephew Julian was missing, and on Sunday the Dreamgirls actress offered a $100,000 (£60,000) reward for his safe return.

But his body was discovered on Monday in an white Chevrolet Suburban in Chicago's West Side. He had also been shot.

Meanwhile, the convicted criminal suspected of the murders told police he is innocent but refused to take a lie-detector test, a police source said.

William Balfour, the 27-year-old stepfather of Hudson's nephew and estranged husband of her sister, told detectives he had a good relationship with the Hudson family, the police official said. When detectives asked Balfour to take the polygraph test, he stopped cooperating and refused to take the test.

Balfour has not been charged, but he is being held in custody for parole violation. Police think he may have had an accomplice, but he is the only suspect in the killings themselves.

His mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson's mother threw Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.

He served seven years in prison for an attempted murder and vehicle hijacking in 1999.

Emily Mortimer: Russians, nudity - and a fibreglass pillar

There's rarely a dull day in the acting career of Emily Mortimer - or in her life, as she tells John Hiscock

Like her father, the author, playwright and barrister John Mortimer, Emily Mortimer has a delightful sense of humour and cannot be serious for too long.Emily MortimerFellow Britons: Emily Mortimer and Chiwetel Ejiofor in David Mamet's Redbelt

Now with a hefty five films on the go, the 36-year-old actress has that most English of traits, a tendency towards self-deprecation, and occasionally collapses into fits of giggles, usually when recalling a particularly embarrassing or humiliating situation involving herself.

She cannot resist telling the story of her disastrous first-night performance as Portia in a stage production of The Merchant of Venice in the early Nineties, and also had no qualms about telling it to David Mamet when she met him to discuss her role in his new martial-arts action-drama, Redbelt.

"It was the first night," she says, "and I was so bad because I hadn't concentrated in rehearsals because I'd fallen in love with the guy playing Bassanio.

"At the interval, I told myself I had to pull myself together and be confident. So I stormed back on to the stage for the second act with my ladies-in-waiting but I was so busy trying to be confident that I completely forgot that this 20ft fibreglass pillar denoting Belmont, where I lived, was coming down from the ceiling, and I collided with it and was knocked unconscious and broke my nose.

"The next thing I knew, I was backstage with someone slapping me and saying I could go back on, so I did. I was actually much better after I'd been knocked out but, as I did my 'quality of mercy is not strained' speech, I got these two enormous black eyes emerging like a panda." Then there were her Russian love affairs which began when she started studying the language while a pupil at St Paul's Girls School in London.

"We had a glamorous Russian teacher who had escaped from Leningrad in the hold of a ship with her boyfriend and she had gold teeth and red stockings and she was the most glamorous person I had ever set eyes on and I just fell in love with her," she recalls.

"She taught me for two years and then I got into Oxford to study English, but I'd fallen so in love with Russian that I went off to Moscow to live there for a year and I got a Russian boyfriend called Dennis, which I was rather annoyed about because if you're going to be a Russian poet you should be called Vladivostock or something. Dennis wasn't quite good enough, but I had a crazy, wonderful time with him." Certainly, Mortimer's life right now is anything but dull. In Pink Panther 2, she returns as the hopelessly incompetent secretary Nicole, who is once again involved in a series of comic and sexually provocative scenes with Steve Martin's clueless Inspector Clouseau.

She also co-stars with Ryan Reynolds in the relationship drama Chaos Theory, has the crime thriller Transsiberian awaiting release and spent six weeks in Los Angeles filming the low-budget Redbelt, which co-stars fellow Briton Chiwetel Ejiofor. And now, she's filming Martin Scorsese's thriller Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio, playing a murderess who escapes from an asylum.

"I've worked with three of the greatest directors and writers of our time - Woody Allen [on Match Point], Mamet and now Scorsese," she says, "and what's interesting about all three of them is how very little they impose on you as directors. You think that when you enter the world of these auteurs they're going to tell you exactly what to do and you're going to be given the most amazing clues as to how to find the part; but instead they leave the acting up to the actors and trust them to do their job. They've been doing it for so long and they have an ease about them and a supreme confidence and take a huge pleasure in what they do."

Now the man in her life is the American actor Allesandro Nivola, whom she met while they were filming Love's Labours Lost. They married five years ago, live in Brooklyn and have a son, Sam, whom she takes with her on her film locations.

She also remains very close to her father, and, when we meet in Beverly Hills, is about to fly back to London to see him in hospital. "He's been the most wonderful dad and somebody I adore," she says. "Being with him now he's 85 is still more fun than being with most people. He's a treat to have as a dad and always has been. I miss him terribly because I'm so far away."

Emily Mortimer made her screen acting debut in 1995 in the mini-series The Glass Virgin, after an Oxford classmate's mother who was a talent agent started sending her on auditions. Subsequent TV and film roles followed, and her big-screen debut came in 1996 as Val Kilmer's wife in the adventure The Ghost and the Darkness.

She played Cate Blanchett's devoted lady-in-waiting in Elizabeth and a spoiled, doomed actress in Wes Craven's Scream 3.

Those who saw her in Lovely and Amazing applauded her bravado in shedding her clothes for a full-frontal nude scene, but she insists, "It wasn't sexy, it was just me being nude." Other films have included Young Adam, Windtalkers, Dear Frankie, Bright Young Things, Match Point and, last year, Lars and the Real Girl. For the past year or so, she has been on a hectic work schedule, but when she finishes filming Shutter Island she plans to slow down and take things much easier.

"It's good working a lot but you can reach rock bottom. It's like being an alcoholic. At some point you just think, 'Ugh, that's too much.' I want to get to a point where I can pick and choose and do things that are fascinating when they come along.

"I definitely feel right now that I'm ready to be a bit quieter this year."

Olympic swimmer poses naked in Beijing

Amanda Beard, naked for Peta
Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard poses naked in the ad

American Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard caused a splash in Beijing today when she posed naked in front of a US flag to protest against the fur trade.

In a poster for the animal rights group PETA, the reigning 200-meter breaststroke champion - who also appeared in Playboy in 2007 - appears naked in front of the flag flag with the slogan: "Be comfortable in your own skin. Don't wear fur."

The 26-year-old Beard swore: "I'd much rather go naked than ever put a dead animal on my body."

She said she decided to participate in the PETA campaign because she loved animals and was horrified to see how fur was produced for fashion in some places.

"I have seen a lot of the videos, and (it) brings me to tears," the four-time Olympian was quoted saying in a PETA statement. "What (some people) think is pretty is actually something that's very gruesome and gross."

The 26-year-old came to prominence at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when as a 14-year-old she took her teddy bear with her on to the victory podium.

Amanda with her poster at the launch today

She won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and, billed as one of the world's sexiest athletes, has also appeared in Sports Illustrated and FHM magazines.

Jason Baker, an Asia-Pacific spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said today's launch of the ad was "a bit more dramatic than we had planned" after Chinese security officials visited a hotel where an official news conference had been scheduled and shut down the event.

"From what I've been told from the hotel, the public security bureau showed up at midnight and told them our specific event had to be canceled for safety reasons, without going into any specifics," Baker said. "When I arrived at 8 a.m., there were public security officials in the press conference room we had booked.

"Amanda didn't want her voice to be silenced, so we went ahead and arranged something else — we never knew if we were going to be stopped at any point."

Baker said the protest was not against China and did not interfere with the Olympics. Police and security did not interfere with the event outside the village's south gate.

"It was a sexy ad really designed for the US market. It was positive, and it was (supposed) to be done in a private function room," Baker said.

"I'm surprised they were so concerned, given we've done similar with Asian celebrities in the past."

Morgan Freeman in hospital after car accident

Morgan Freeman, here with wife Myrna, is fighting for his life after a car accident in Mississippi

Morgan Freeman was a serious car accident Sunday night in Mississippi. He is critically ill after being airlifted to hospital following his car crash.

Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman, 71, was travelling east on a highway in a rural area of Tallahatchie County when his vehicle veered off the edge of the road just a few miles from his home.

The Hollywood star and a female passenger had to be cut free from their vehicle after the smash, which occurred at 11.30pm on Sunday night.

Though the accident was serious, Freeman was conscious as he was pulled him from the car, according to Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, who was on the scene of the accident.

“He was lucid, conscious,” McFerrin told the Associated Press. “He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”

Emergency crews pulled Freeman and his passenger Demaris Meyer from the car and airlifted them to the Regional Medical Centre in Memphis more than 100 miles from the scene of the crash.

The accident is currently under investigation, but no alcohol was involved, Mississippi Highway Patrol told Access. The spokesperson went on to say that no charges have been filed against Freeman.

Christina Applegate battling cancer

The former "Married With Children" star has been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer.
Christina ApplegateActress Christina Applegate reportedly is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Ame Van Iden, publicist for the 36-year-old actress, released the following statement late Saturday:

"Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery."

Applegate has earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her starring role in ABC's comedy "Samantha Who?" Applegate plays the title character, a young career woman who awakens from an eight-day coma remembering nothing about her past.

The series debuted last October and marked the return to television of Applegate, who helped establish the upstart Fox network in 1987 as ditzy teenager Kelly Bundy on "Married ... with Children." The raunchy comedy ran 11 seasons and has been airing in syndication ever since.

She won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2003 for her portrayal of Amy Green, the younger sister of Jennifer Aniston's character on "Friends."

Applegate earned a 2005 Tony Award nomination for her Broadway role in "Sweet Charity."

"I'm really grateful that acting is the job that was chosen for me," Applegate told The Associated Press in April. "I get really lost when I'm not working. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with myself. Thank God for dance class and The New York Times crossword puzzle and `American Idol.' But acting is what I really have to do."

Applegate is among the celebrities scheduled to appear on the "Stand Up To Cancer" one-hour television special to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on Sept. 5 to raise funds for cancer research.
