Gay marriage has been legal in California since June but opponents of same-sex marriages collected enough signatures to force a referendum seeking to ban them.

Called "Proposition 8," it goes before voters in the most populous US state November 4.

"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," the Los Angeles Times quoted Pitt as saying in a statement.

He and partner Angelina Jolie have said they would wed when everyone who wants to get married in the United States is able to do so. Same-sex marriages are illegal in most US states.

Angelina Jolie set to give £5million from twins' photo deal to charity

Angelina Jolie gives birth to boy and girl
Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, 33, had the twins by caesarean section on Saturday evening at the Lenval hospital on the glamorous Promenade des Anglais waterfront drive in Nice. Actor Brad Pitt, the twins' father, was at her side.
The twins of Angelina: The girl, named Vivienne Marcheline, weighed 2.27 kg (5 lbs) while her brother, Knox Leon, weighed 2.28 kg.

An unnamed charity could be £5m better off today after the birth of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's twins.

The bidding war has already begun for the first photos of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline who were born on Saturday night at a French hospital.

French papers have reported that an American magazine has already offered $10m (£5m) for the exclusive images of the new babies - with all the money going to a worthy cause.

After the birth of their daughter Shiloh two years ago, the couple auctioned off the photo shoot to People magazine in the US and Hello! in Britain for up to £5m with an undisclosed charity benefiting.

It is believed Pitt and Jolie are in the process of negotiating a similar deal for the photos of the latest additions to their family.

The twins were born one minute apart with Pitt by Jolie's side as the doctor performed a Caesarean section to deliver Knox and Vivienne - both weighing 5lb.

Jolie's obstetrician, Dr Michel Sussmann, said: 'Mother, the babies, and the father are doing marvellously well.' He said the Caesarean was moved forward from its originally planned date 'for medical reasons' so the babies could be born 'in the best conditions.'

He said 33-year-old Miss Jolie was under epidural and able to speak to a 'perfectly calm' Pitt during the birth.

He added that Jolie, 33, is expected to stay and rest at the exclusive Lenval hospital in Nice for the next few days and is already enjoying specially couriered-in food for her stay.

'Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. The mother and father are very, very happy.'

The actress is then expected to depart as she arrived - in a helicopter taking off from the roof of the building, most likely in the dead of night to avoid being photographed.

Vivienne's middle name was chosen in honour of Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in January last year after a seven-year battle with cancer.

Miss Bertrand raised Miss Jolie and her brother, James Haven, after divorcing their father, actor Jon Voight, when Miss Jolie was three.

The arrival of the twins brings the couple's family to six. They are already parents to three adopted children: Cambodian boy Maddox, six, Vietnamese boy Pax Thien, four, and Ethiopian girl Zahara, three.

Their natural daughter Shiloh, two, was born in Namibia in 2006.

Miss Jolie arrived at the Lenval hospital in late June, provoking a media circus with photographers desperate for a picture of the mother-to-be.

Yesterday, news of the births spread like wildfire through the streets and markets of Nice.

The mayor, Christian Estrosi, seized the opportunity to promote his city by arriving at the hospital to sign the birth certificates wearing a smart suit and full make-up for the TV cameras.

'I congratulate the happy parents, who have chosen our city for this happy event,' he said. 'The newborns are, history will not forget it, real Nicois, citizens of Nice.'

Miss Jolie and Pitt, 44 - who met on the set of 2005 film Mr & Mrs Smith, when Pitt was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston - own a 17th century villa in the village of Correns in Provence.

Angelina Jolie wary about revealing due date

Angelina Jolie and partner Brad Pitt are determined not to reveal the due date of their twins, for they are wary about the media frenzy it would create.

She tells Vanity Fair magazine in a new interview just why she doesn’t want to make the due date public knowledge, even though actor Dustin Hoffman has hinted it could be August 19, reports Contactmusic. "I don't want to say. If I do say, people will start stressing on our due date," she tells the mag.

And, the A-list Hollywood

But the birth is not the only thing that has the world’s press eagerly anticipating. The bidding war for the first photographs of the couple’s twins is already reaching a high, with magazines offering as much as 15 million dollars for exclusive rights.

In 2006, the couple offered the first pictures of daughter Shiloh through distributor Getty Images while People magazine paid more than 4.1 million dollars for the North American rights. British magazine Hello! obtained the international rights for 3.5 million dollars.

However, Angelina and partner Brad Pitt donated all the profits to an undisclosed charity.

couple certainly has
something to worry about, for the media went wild last month when it was falsely reported that Angelina had given birth months before she was due.

Angelina Jolie on the cover of Vanity Fair- July 2008

Angelina will appear on the the July 2008 cover issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

ANGELINA JOLIE is one hot, hot mama - as demonstrated here in this sizzling magazine spread.

And BRAD PITT is one lucky fella - because it seems the actress was hell-bent on avoiding a Hollywood romance following her disastrous marriage to BILLY BOB THORNTON.

In fact, she was searching for an aid worker - or a man of similar ilk - to settle down with after concluding that showbiz relationships don't work.

The actress - who is currently pregnant with twins - looks unbelievable in a BARBARELLA-inspired shoot for Vanity fair magazine.

With boobs up to her eyeballs and smokey eyes, Angie says she feels sexier than ever.

And she admits she has to thank partner BRAD PITT for her radiance.

Angie - mum to MADDOX, PAX THIEN, SHILOH and ZAHARA - said: "I’m fortunate. I think some women have a different experience depending on their partner.

"I think that affects it. I happen to be with somebody who finds pregnancy very sexy. So that makes me feel very sexy."

But Angie reveals how she initially didn't want to fall for another actor after divorces from Billy Bob and JONNY LEE MILLER.

She said: “After my last divorce, I said I was absolutely going to marry somebody in another field, an aid worker or something.

"Then I met Brad, everything I wasn’t looking for, but the best man, the best father I could possibly wish for, you know?

She says “I don’t see him as an actor. I see him very much as a dad, as somebody who loves travel and architecture more than being in movies.”

Angelina also revealed that Brad did not start charity campaigning until after he met her, but he always showed an interest in humanitarian causes.

She added: “Brad’s passion for international affairs was actually one of the things that brought us together. Though he wasn’t as publicly active, I found him to be very aware of the world, very curious, very compassionate.

“In his private way, he had been doing a lot. When we met, we realized our common goals were that we both wanted to be involved in the world and see what we could do.

"When it comes to common goals — orphans, orphans’ rights, children — we support each other. It brings us together and makes our relationship work.”

Here’s a preview (to Vanity Fair magazine):

Angelina Jolie on being pregnant with twins:

“I love it. It makes me feel like a woman. It makes me feel that all the things about my body are suddenly there for a reason. It makes you feel round and supple, and to have a little life inside you is amazing. Also, I’m fortunate. I think some women have a different experience depend-ing on their partner. I think that affects it. I happen to be with somebody who finds pregnancy very sexy. So that makes me feel very sexy.”

Angelina Jolie on her international family:

“When I was growing up I wanted to adopt, because I was aware there were kids that didn’t have parents. It’s not a humanitarian thing, because I don’t see it as a sacrifice. It’s a gift. We’re all lucky to have each other. I look at Shiloh—because, obviously, physically, she is the one that looks like Brad and I when we were little—and say, ‘If these were our brothers aAngelina Jolie nakednd sisters, how much would we have known by the time we were six that it took into our 30s and 40s to figure out?’ I suppose I’m giving them the childhood I always wished I had.”

This isn’t the first time that Angelina Jolie has posed to Vanity Fair. Here are the covers and spreads from all three of Angelina Jolie’s appearances, together with a sampling of her trademark edgy insights.

Angelina Jolie on daughter Shiloh’s birth:

“We were in this little hospital in Africa when Shi was born. I don’t think there was anybody else in the hospital. It was just a little cottage, the three of us. It ended up being the greatest thing…. I had a C-section and I found it fascinating. I didn’t find it a sacrifice and I didn’t find it a painful experience. I found it a fascinating miracle of what a body can do.”

Angelina Jolie on nannies: “We don’t ever have anybody spend the night. We may have to adjust that when the next one comes. But we do have ladies that work with us, and they’re also from different cultures and back-grounds. One lady’s a Vietnamese teacher—wonderful. One is of Congolese descent from Bel-gium. Another is from the States and is really creative and does art programs.”

Angelina Jolie on artists as parents: “Artists raise their kids differently,” she said. “We communicate to the point where we probably annoy our children. We have art around the house, we have books, we go to plays, we talk. Our focus is art and painting and dress-up and singing. It’s what we love. So I think you can see how artists in some way raise other artists.”
